Brendle Recital Hall, Scales Fine Arts Center

The New York Times, CNN, CBS, Oprah Magazine, and Reader’s Digest have all lauded Angela Brown’s multi-genre career on their front pages. She has graced leading opera and symphonic stages on six continents, including Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, National Opera of Paris, Vienna State Opera, Cape Town Opera, and Deutsche Oper Berlin. Her performances have also reached audiences at the Edmonton Opera, Calgary Philharmonic, Shanghai World Expo, Moscow Performing Arts Center, the Metropolitan Opera, and beyond. Additionally, she has performed solo recitals throughout the United States, Canada, Spain, New Zealand, China, and Africa.
Angela’s vocal artistry shines on Laura Karpman’s two-time Grammy Award® winning recording, Ask Your Mama. To create A Woman’s Life, composer Richard Danielpour set the poetry of Dr. Maya Angelou specifically for Angela, who premiered the work with the Pittsburgh Symphony and Philadelphia Orchestra before recording it for the Naxos label with the Nashville Symphony Orchestra.
Distinguished composers have also crafted major opera roles with her voice in mind; Angela originated and premiered the roles of Addie Parker in Daniel Schnyder’s Charlie Parker’s Yardbird and Cilla in Richard Danielpour’s Margaret Garner. In March 2026, she will debut the world premiere of Phenomenal Queen: Coretta Scott King, a work James Lee III wrote specifically for her, accompanied by the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra.
Angela’s leadership in opera extends as the founder of Morning Brown, Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to the development of multicultural role models and audiences in the performing arts. She received the inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award from the Coalition for African Americans in the Performing Arts and The Willson Center for Humanities and the Arts of the University of Georgia named Angela the 2023 Delta Visiting Chair for Global Understanding. Angela is the Artistic and Educational Ambassador of Indianapolis Opera and a voting member of The Recording Academy.
